Poland Completes Acquisition of M1A1 Abrams Tanks, Awaits Delivery of M1A2 SEP v.3

 




The Polish Army has officially received the final shipment of M1A1 Abrams tanks, marking the end of this particular procurement phase. As of June 26, the last batch of 47 main battle tanks has been delivered. On the same day, Poland also acquired 26 M1152A1B2 HMMWV workshops and various consumables. This completion of M1A1FEP Abrams deliveries sets the stage for the future arrival of the M1A2 SEP v.3 main battle tanks for the Polish armed forces.

In April 2022, Poland signed an agreement to purchase 250 units of the latest M1A2 Abrams tanks in the SEPv3 configuration. This $4.75 billion contract includes M88A2 Hercules recovery vehicles and M1110 Joint Assault Bridges.

By July 2022, Poland decided to expedite the acquisition of approximately 240 additional vehicles to replace their Soviet-era T-72 tanks, which were sent to Ukraine as part of defense aid. To bridge this gap, Poland secured used American Abrams tanks under a separate agreement, involving 116 pre-owned vehicles from the US Marine Corps inventory, featuring updated fire control systems and enhanced armor protection.

Poland received its first batch of M1A1FEP Abrams tanks on June 28, 2023, nearly 11 months after the contracts were signed. This initial delivery included 14 tanks and three M88A2 Hercules machines. Subsequent deliveries accelerated, with 26 tanks and nine M88A2 Hercules machines arriving in November 2023, followed by another 29 tanks in January 2024.

In February 2024, Poland inaugurated a regional maintenance hub for Abrams tanks in PoznaƄ, about 300 kilometers west of Warsaw. This facility, managed by the state-owned Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), is available to American forces stationed in Poland and other European partners requiring Abrams repairs. PGZ stated that the hub will support both Polish Abrams tanks and those deployed abroad, emphasizing the need for comprehensive service, operation, and maintenance of military equipment.

The U.S. Marine Corps' M1A1FEP tanks and the U.S. Army's M1A1 tanks share a common base but have key differences tailored to their specific operational needs. The Marine Corps' M1A1FEP tanks feature the Blue Force Tracker communication system, additional armor packages for enhanced protection, and modified suspension systems for better handling amphibious operations and rough terrain. They also have upgraded fire-control systems for improved targeting and engagement in dynamic combat situations. Logistically, these tanks are designed for self-sufficiency in austere environments, reflecting the Marines' need for extended independent operations without extensive support infrastructure.

Western Sanctions Fail to Diminish Russian Military-Industrial Output Amid Ukraine Conflict

 




Despite extensive sanctions and significant efforts, Western nations have been unable to effectively undermine Russia's military-industrial complex. This issue extends beyond electronic components, which continue to reach Russia through alternative and more costly routes despite export restrictions. The production of shells, missiles, armored vehicles, and drones has surged, enabling President Vladimir Putin to persist in his aggressive campaign against a neighboring country.

Experts from the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), Jack Watling and Gary Somerville, attribute the West's failure to halt Russia’s military operations to a lack of a unified approach during the initial sanction phase, among other factors.

A significant issue is Europe’s lack of infrastructure to enforce sanctions effectively, unlike the United States. Europe has historically treated sanctions more as a regulatory tool rather than economic warfare, aiming to shame rather than significantly disrupt harmful activities.

Despite the concerted efforts of Ukraine's international allies, Russia continues to obtain nitrocellulose from Germany, Turkey, and Taiwan. Additionally, it sources other essential raw materials for explosives globally, allowing rapid escalation in ammunition production. Since the war began, Russia has significantly increased its production of:

  • 152-mm artillery shells: Increasing production by 5.3 times, from 250,000 per year to an expected 1.325 million in 2024. Around 800,000 122-mm shells are expected this year.
  • Grad multiple launch rocket systems: Production will increase by 15.2 times, from 33,000 to over 500,000 shells. The Uragan system will see a 6.1 times increase, from 2,800 in 2023 to 17,000 this year.
  • Kh-101 cruise missiles: Production has increased from 56 units in 2021 to a projected 420 units in 2023, aiming for 460 units.
  • 9M723 Iskander missiles: Production has more than tripled, rising from 50 in reserve at the start of 2023 to 180 within a year.
  • Iranian Shahed-136 drones: Production has surged 6.3 times, with collaborative production in Russia and Iran now exceeding 250 units monthly.

Estimating armored vehicle production in Russia is challenging. In 2024, Russia is projected to produce around 1,500 tanks and 3,000 other armored vehicles, with 85% being refurbished from existing stocks. The production of new armored vehicles is also increasing, with the Kurgan Machine-Building Plant's BMP-3 units production recorded at 100, 108, 120, and 135 units quarterly in 2023.

Russian manufacturers have adapted to losing access to Thales’ thermal imagers from France by substituting them with Chinese and Belarusian alternatives. These conversions require machine modifications, but significant imports from the United States, Europe, Taiwan, and other countries continue, including essential software updates.

The importation of dual-use goods critical to Russia's military-industrial strength has surged since President Putin met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in March 2023, according to a report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Deliveries of helicopter parts, navigation systems, and precision machinery for weapons and aircraft components have jumped from a few thousand to nearly 30,000 monthly, enabling the Kremlin to expedite the production of armaments like armored vehicles, artillery, missiles, and drones. This boost has fortified their defenses during the Ukrainian counteroffensive in 2023, explained CSIS senior fellow Max Bergmann.

Russia Completes Trials of Upgraded T-14 Armata Tank with Powerful 152 mm Gun





The testing phase for a new version of the T-14 Armata tank is nearing completion at the 38th Research Institute of the Russian Ministry of Defense. As of December 2023, Rostec Corporation has made significant progress on this enhanced T-14, according to Sergey Chemezov, Rostec’s head. Chemezov highlighted the tank's advanced capabilities and potential.

Chemezov noted that the final adjustments are being made, which will soon make the T-14 more formidable. The latest T-14, built on the "Armata" platform, features advanced Russian-made electronic systems and a new fire control system. However, detailed specifications of these upgrades remain undisclosed.

Reports from the defense industry reveal that the new T-14 model replaces the 125-mm 2A82-1M gun with an improved 152-mm smoothbore 2A83-1A gun. This gun, featuring a chrome barrel, was originally developed in the '90s for the T-95, also known as “Object 195.” The project was halted in 2009 due to outdated Soviet-era technologies and excess weight.



Following this, the Ural Design Bureau for Transport Machine Building (UKBTM) initiated the “Combat System of the Future Armata” project, leading to the development of the T-14. This tank incorporates an uninhabited combat module and an isolated armored crew capsule. Various versions were created, including export models and one with a 152-mm gun.

In 2015, efforts began to develop a robotic version of the T-14 tank with a 125-mm main gun. Rostec started testing prototypes of this unmanned T-14 in April 2020. However, updates on the unmanned version have been scarce, especially since 2022, due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and increased production of T-90M tanks.

Testing of the experimental T-14 with a 152 mm gun started in February 2016. This version, intended for specialized combat missions, remains in the testing phase despite expectations of earlier deployment. There have been speculations about the project's suspension to focus on a version with a 125 mm barrel, but recent updates confirm ongoing development.

A military expert indicated that this experimental tank, built on the "Armata" platform, is demonstrating unique and versatile capabilities in tests. It features a hull nearly identical to the basic T-14 Armata tank, armed with a 152-mm gun, and includes updates for stealth and enhanced protection.

The 152-mm gun significantly increases firepower, allowing the tank to fire modern long-range ammunition, including high-explosive and thermobaric projectiles. This new ammunition led to modifications in the automatic loading system and ammunition rack placement.

The T-14 can carry 40 shells for the 152-mm version, with 24 in the autoloader. In comparison, the standard T-14 with a 125-mm gun carries 45 shells, 32 in the autoloader. The new 152 mm caliber BOPS projectile, made from heavy materials like depleted uranium, has an effective range of about 5 km.

The tank can also use advanced Krasnopol artillery projectiles and anti-tank guided missiles from the 9M133FM family, with a range of up to 10 km. This versatility allows the T-14 to function as a short-range air defense system as well.

Despite the increased firepower, the 152-mm barrel has a shorter lifespan compared to the 125-mm barrel, and the vehicle’s weight has increased, potentially affecting mobility. However, the T-14’s design allows for easy switching between different gun calibers without altering the turret ring system.

Production of the T-14 has moved to UVZ’s main tank assembly workshop No. 130 in Nizhny Tagil, where new advanced machinery has been installed. Mass production of the new T-14 tank is expected to start this year, along with development of the T-15 infantry fighting vehicle and the T-16 armored repair vehicle, as stated by military expert Viktor Murakhovski.

Scrapped KNDS-Leonardo Deal Threatens Italian Leopard 2 Tank Acquisition

 




The major Italian plan to acquire Leopard tanks is at risk after the cooperation agreement between tank manufacturer KNDS and Italy’s Leonardo was abruptly terminated due to disagreements over technology transfer.

Initially announced in December 2023, the partnership between Leonardo and the German-French alliance aimed to give Leonardo a significant role in Italy’s planned purchase of 130 Leopard tanks. Leonardo intended to integrate its own components and electronics into the tanks, which were to be assembled at its facility in La Spezia, Italy. However, KNDS announced on Tuesday that Leonardo’s demands exceeded what KNDS was willing to provide.

Frank Haun, KNDS CEO, emphasized the importance of maintaining the Leopard 2 as the standard battle tank for Europe and NATO, citing its contribution to interoperability and joint combat power. He stated, “The parties did not manage to agree on configuration.”

Following KNDS’s announcement, Leonardo released its own statement acknowledging the breakdown in negotiations and reaffirming its commitment to supplying the Italian Army with a high-performing, interoperable, and modern solution. Leonardo also hinted at future collaborations with other international partners.

The failure of these talks could impact Italy's plans for a new tracked fighting vehicle and Leonardo's potential stake in KNDS, which would have supported the consolidation of the European land defense industry. Haun confirmed that discussions about Leonardo’s strategic participation in KNDS also fell through.

KNDS, a consortium of Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and France’s Nexter, appears to prioritize national interests despite political pressure to create industry synergies in response to Russian aggression and global competition. An industry insider indicated that KNDS’s offer to Italy lacked any technology transfer, which was unacceptable given Leonardo’s capability to integrate its own systems.

A Leonardo official mentioned earlier this year that the Italian firm considered supplying components such as an electro-optical sensor, software-defined radio, the command and control system, and possibly the gun barrel for the tanks. Another source suggested that Italy might cancel its Leopard tank purchase despite parliamentary approval, possibly opting for the Rheinmetall Panther KF51, even though it is only a prototype.

Last year’s cooperation agreement between Leonardo and KNDS also included a potential €5 billion program to build 1,050 tracked fighting vehicles. Leonardo and Italy’s Iveco Defence Vehicles are currently choosing a European partner for the A2CS program, with candidates including KNDS (proposing its Boxer vehicle) and Rheinmetall (offering its Lynx).

The breakdown of the KNDS-Leonardo deal complicates future collaborations, including Italy’s entry into the European battle tank program known as the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), which KNDS is managing.

Russian Company Offers Bounty for Downing Ukrainian F-16 Jets





 A Russian company has announced substantial rewards for shooting down any Ukrainian F-16 fighter jets. Sergey Shmotyev, the director of the Ural-based company Fores, has offered a bounty of 15 million rubles ($168,000) for the first F-16 downed and 500,000 rubles ($5,600) for each additional one.

In the past, Fores has offered rewards for destroying tanks, with 5 million rubles ($56,000) for the first tank and 500,000 rubles ($5,600) for each subsequent tank. Shmotyev mentioned that over 20 tanks have claimed these rewards.

Despite the planned delivery of F-16s to Ukraine, many military analysts and Western officials believe it won't drastically change the conflict's dynamics. Estonian Defense Chief Hanno Pevkur previously stated that the European Union has not reached a consensus on sending military personnel to Ukraine due to opposition from several countries.

The anticipated American-made F-16s, to be donated by countries like Denmark and the Netherlands, are expected to arrive later this year. Western experts and officials emphasize that the arrival of these jets depends on the readiness and training of Ukrainian pilots.

A Greek officer from the Hellenic Air Force has reportedly arrived in Kyiv to assist with the operational use of the F-16, although his identity remains confidential. Greece’s experience with Western combat aircraft, particularly through conflicts with Turkey, provides valuable knowledge in air-to-air missions.

Reports confirm that the first group of Ukrainian F-16 pilots has completed training in the USA, although the exact number of trained pilots is undisclosed. Earlier this year, a U.S. defense official noted that four Ukrainian pilots were training with the 162nd Wing at Morris Air National Guard Base in Arizona, with 20 support personnel training in Texas.

Ukraine is set to receive several fourth-generation fighter jets from nations like the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, and Norway as part of a coalition fighter framework, including commitments from the U.S. to train Ukrainian airmen.

In 2023, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced bonuses for Russian soldiers who destroy Western equipment on the battlefield. These include $1,200 for taking out a Leopard, Abrams, or Challenger 2 tank, and $600 for an armored infantry vehicle. Russian sources claim that 14 Abrams tanks have already been destroyed, resulting in payouts of $16,800 for each tank.

In an interesting twist, Russian grenadier Andrey Kravtsov received $12,000 in 2023 for destroying a Leopard 2 tank, with the sum potentially including additional rewards from private entities alongside state bonuses.

Ukraine will receive various types of F-16 jets, primarily the older F-16AM/BM Block 15 models, which feature basic electronics and systems. The Block 40 version has significant upgrades, including advanced radar and night flying systems, while the Block 50 version offers improved tracking and weapon capabilities. The Block 60, or F-16E/F, is the most advanced, featuring superior radar, electronic warfare capabilities, and extended range for longer missions.

US General Defends Abrams Tanks Amid Ukrainian Criticisms, Highlights Future Upgrades





 In response to Ukrainian military complaints about the performance of US-supplied Abrams tanks, a retired US general has strongly defended the tanks, acknowledging their heavy maintenance but rejecting the criticisms as exaggerated. Ukrainian tank crews recently raised concerns about the Abrams tanks, citing issues such as armor inadequacy and engine problems, deeming them unsuitable for the combat conditions in Ukraine.

Ukrainian authorities have expressed dissatisfaction, pointing out the tanks' inability to withstand the terrain and conditions of the conflict zone. Crews reported various grievances, including armor that fails to meet modern standards, engine malfunctions, and electronics vulnerabilities due to condensation from rain or fog. Additionally, they noted that despite firing multiple rounds, some targets remained intact, questioning the tanks' combat effectiveness.

Retired US General Mark Hertling refuted these claims in an interview with CNN. Hertling, with three decades of service in Europe, dismissed the criticisms as exaggerated. He stated that the Abrams tanks were designed for a NATO environment and that he did not encounter the issues described by the Ukrainian crews during his tenure. He labeled the complaints about condensation, armor, and obstacle clearance as "bullshit" and attributed any perceived shortcomings to the crews' failure to select the right weapon systems and maintain the tanks properly.

Hertling emphasized that mechanical breakdowns are typical in tank operations and that disgruntled crew members might exaggerate issues. Despite knowing the maintenance demands, Ukraine had requested the Abrams tanks for military support.

Lessons from Ukraine for Future Abrams Tanks The deployment of Abrams tanks, specifically the M1A1 models, was intended to strengthen Ukraine's resistance against Russian forces. However, battlefield experiences have challenged their previously invincible reputation. After persistent appeals, the US agreed in January 2023 to send 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. By October 2023, all tanks had arrived, raising hopes for a strategic advantage.

Nevertheless, these tanks faced significant challenges, particularly from Russian drones, with at least five Abrams tanks reportedly destroyed. Recent images show Abrams tanks in Ukraine outfitted with anti-drone armor screens, though their effectiveness remains uncertain.

In response to the lessons learned from the conflict in Ukraine, the US military is accelerating efforts to incorporate these insights into the development of the next-generation Abrams tank. Brigadier General Geoffrey Norman, director of the Next-Generation Combat Vehicle Cross-Functional Team, acknowledged the Abrams' limitations against modern threats such as anti-tank missiles and drones. While the tank offers excellent protection against direct fire, it is vulnerable to top-attack threats.

Norman highlighted the Abrams' effectiveness in offensive maneuvers, emphasizing its mobility and firepower. However, he cautioned against stationary use, which increases vulnerability. To address these challenges, Army leaders are reevaluating formation options to distribute capabilities and protect soldiers.

In September 2023, following observations from the Ukrainian conflict, the US Army announced a shift in its tank modernization strategy. Instead of proceeding with the planned moderate upgrade (SEPv4), the Army opted for a more ambitious upgrade, the M1E3 Abrams, to be known as the M1A3 upon deployment. The new design aims for a lighter tank with enhanced survivability and a reduced logistical footprint. Details on the M1A3 are still being refined, with General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) serving as the prime contractor.

US Army Pushes For Lighter, High-Tech Abrams Tank with Enhanced Capabilities

 




The U.S. Army has awarded General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) a contract to begin preliminary design for a new variant of the Abrams tank, designated M1E3. This new tank is expected to be lighter and incorporate advanced technologies to enhance its battlefield survivability, according to Brig. Gen. Geoffrey Norman, the head of combat vehicle modernization.

The contract aims to align the development of the M1E3 Abrams with the M30 Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle, hoping to field both simultaneously within armored brigade combat teams. Whether this alignment is possible will depend on factors such as technology maturation and budgets.

The Army is currently running a competition between American Rheinmetall Vehicles and GDLS to develop the XM30 vehicle, which will replace the Bradley infantry fighting vehicle. A winner is expected to be chosen by late fiscal 2027 or early fiscal 2028.

The preliminary design schedule for the M1E3 is under review, with a more concrete timeline anticipated by fall. The Army decided last fall to abandon its upgrade plans for the Abrams tank in favor of a more significant modernization effort, resulting in the end of the M1A2 System Enhancement Package version 4 program.

The M1E3 will be an engineering change proposal with a different design approach to meet existing requirements, resulting in a very differently configured Abrams tank. Over the next 18 months, the Army will focus on technology maturation efforts, including autoloader capabilities, alternate power trains, active protection systems, and aids for fully buttoned-up crew operation.

The goal is to reduce the tank's weight from its current 73 tons to under 60 tons, though this is considered ambitious. Changes may include a revised crew configuration, possibly involving a remote or optionally manned turret. Hybrid power trains will also be examined to reduce fuel consumption and achieve silent watch and drive capabilities, while still maintaining high dash speeds.

The M1E3 will feature an integrated active protection system as a core component of its design to enhance vehicle survivability. This new tank variant represents a major step in the modernization of the U.S. Army's armored forces.

Ukrainian Military Criticizes US Abrams Tanks: Vulnerabilities and Battlefield Challenges Revealed





 The reputation of the US-supplied Abrams tanks, once considered a game-changer for Ukraine’s military, is now under heavy scrutiny. Ukrainian soldiers have reported weaknesses and flaws in these American vehicles, raising doubts about their effectiveness in the ongoing conflict with Russian forces.

Initially, the deployment of Abrams tanks, specifically the M1A1 models, was intended to bolster Ukraine's resistance. In January 2023, following persistent lobbying by Ukrainian officials, the US agreed to send 31 Abrams tanks. Each costing approximately $10 million, these tanks were expected to breach Russian defensive lines. By October 2023, all 31 tanks had arrived in Ukraine, igniting hopes for a strategic advantage.

However, battlefield experiences have revealed significant challenges. At least five Abrams tanks have been destroyed by Russian attacks, particularly from drones, undermining their anticipated impact. Ukrainian tank crews trained in Germany expressed concerns about the tanks’ armor, stating it is not strong enough to protect against modern weapons.

"The tank’s armor is not sufficient for this moment," said one crew member, known as Joker. "It doesn’t protect the crew. For real, today, this is the war of drones. So now, when the tank rolls out, they always try to hit them." Another crew member, Dnipro, highlighted that Abrams tanks have become the "number one target" on the battlefield, emphasizing the high risk to soldiers.

Despite reports suggesting a withdrawal of Abrams tanks from the front lines, officials from the 47th Mechanized Brigade confirmed that all Abrams tanks remain near the eastern front. Technical issues have further compounded the tanks' challenges. During a CNN visit, one tank was immobilized due to an engine problem despite being newly shipped from Poland. Additionally, rain or fog can cause condensation, potentially damaging the vehicle's electronics.

The crews also face ammunition issues, with the current supplies being unsuitable for their combat needs. "What we have is more for direct tank-to-tank fights, which happens very rarely," Joker explained. "More often, we work as artillery. You need to take apart a tree line or a building. We had a case when we fired 17 rounds into a house, and it was still standing."

Why Are Abrams Tanks Facing Challenges?

Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) play a critical role in modern high-intensity land warfare. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has shown that large-scale offensive operations require an adequate supply of these powerful machines. However, several factors have contributed to the struggles of US-supplied Abrams tanks on the Ukrainian frontlines.

Some Western sources have criticized Ukrainian leadership for poor operational planning. However, Ukraine's armed forces are at a severe disadvantage against a well-armed and deeply entrenched Russian Army. The effectiveness of Abrams tanks has also been hindered by the lack of crucial aerial support, which is vital for modern armored warfare. Ukrainian tank crews noted the critical difference between NATO and Ukrainian battlefield conditions. Abrams tanks were designed for a NATO style of warfare, which heavily relies on air power and artillery to prepare the battlefield before tanks and infantry advance. Kyiv has often expressed frustration over the lack of adequate artillery and air power.

Joker, a Ukrainian tank crew member, explained that NATO soldiers would never undertake similar advances without air support. "Call the aviation, call the artillery," he mimicked a NATO soldier, pointing out that Ukraine has neither adequate aviation nor artillery, only tanks.

Entrenched defenses can only be breached with decisive airpower and massing heavy armor. Without airpower, this tactic requires numerous tanks, but Kyiv's current arsenal is a patchwork of different vehicles. While Washington has supplied 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, experts argue that at least two brigades of Abrams tanks—approximately 200—are needed in a coordinated effort to make an impact on the battlefield.

Despite their advanced design and capabilities, the limited number of Abrams tanks cannot overcome the well-fortified Russian defenses. Ukraine has become a graveyard for tanks, as even these advanced vehicles succumb to the harsh realities of the battlefield.

Pakistan Unveils Advanced Aircraft and Rocket Programs at Military Technology Parade








 During the March 23 Pakistan Day Parade held in the capital, Pakistan's military proudly exhibited its latest defense capabilities, unveiling a series of cutting-edge aircraft and rocket projects. Among the showcased equipment was the Haider platform, representing the first locally produced VT-4 main battle tank, which made its debut appearance. This tank, part of the pilot production batch unveiled earlier in March by the state-owned armored fighting vehicles manufacturer Heavy Industries Taxila, marks a significant milestone in Pakistan's defense manufacturing capabilities.




Moreover, Pakistan showcased the long-range HQ-9/P surface-to-air missile system, making its inaugural appearance. This missile system, supplied by China and entering service in 2021, boasts a range of 125 kilometers, adding a formidable layer to Pakistan's air defense architecture. The parade also featured the unveiling of Pakistan's indigenous Fatah 2 guided multiple-launch rocket system and the medium-range Ababeel ballistic missile, both showcasing the nation's prowess in missile technology.


The display of these advanced military assets underscores Pakistan's commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities and modernizing its armed forces. The decision to unveil these projects during the Pakistan Day Parade highlights the significance of these advancements in bolstering Pakistan's security posture.





Furthermore, Pakistan has announced ambitious new defense programs, including the PFX Program aimed at replacing the JF-17 combat aircraft. Additionally, the Fatah 3, with a range of 450 kilometers, is set to enter service soon, while the Fatah 4, boasting a range of 700 kilometers, is currently under development. These programs signify Pakistan's determination to stay at the forefront of military technology and maintain a robust defense posture.

Experts have noted the strategic implications of these developments, with the HQ-9/P missile system offering shorter effective ranges but superior sensor performance compared to its Russian counterparts. KMW buys Armoured Vehicle Manufacturer


BONN — German tank maker Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) has reached an agreement with the EDAG Group to take over its production of armored civil vehicles.
KMW announced the deal Jan. 23, saying the purchase of the German automotive development specialist still requires approval by the cartel authorities.
The acquisition is a move by KMW to strengthen its role in the market for protected military wheeled and tracked vehicles using EDAG’s technologies, as well as developing activities in the highly protected civil vehicles sector.
The acquisition also complements KMW’s strategic activities to establish itself in Central and South America. EDAG manufactures its protection systems at sites in Ingolstadt, Germany, as well as a facility in Mexico.
“The extension of our numerous protection activities through the EDAG protection branch is a logical step and, with a view to the site in Mexico, a consistent continuation of our Central and South America strategy,” Frank Haun, chief executive and president of KMW, said in a press statement.

Nexter signs multi layer Ammo deal with France


PARIS — Nexter Munitions has signed a multiyear contract worth an initial 138 million euros ($178 million) with the Direction GĂ©nĂ©rale de l’Armement (DGA) procurement office to develop and produce large caliber ammunition, the Ministry of Defense said.
The first tranche order is worth 138 million euros, with conditional tranches to be placed, a DGA spokesman told journalists.
Under the contract, signed Dec. 30, Nexter will be responsible for development, qualification and production of 100mm shells for the Navy, and 105mm, 120mm and 155mm for the Army, with delivery in stages to 2019, the ministry said in a Jan. 19 statement.
Nexter has been anxious to seal a munitions deal as there was concern over workload for its ammunitions factory at La Chapelle, near Bourges in central France.
The contract reflected a response to the operational needs of the forces, based on recent lessons learned, and was intended to support critical industrial capacities, the DGA statement said.
“The visibility afforded to Nexter Munitions allows the company to adapt its industrial capability and to increase its competitiveness in export markets,” the DGA said.
Nexter Munitions has annual sales of 160 million euros, of which exports account for about 20 percent, the DGA said.
“This package contract covers the Armed Forces' requirements for large-caliber ammunition and gives France guarantees regarding the short and medium-term sustainability of the business of its supplier, Nexter Munitions, for both development and production of large- caliber ammunition,” the company said in a statement.
“The multi-annual nature of the supply contracts also ensures better price control in an extremely competitive global market,” Nexter said.
The orders covers development and qualification of 155/52-caliber illumination and smoke shells, supply of modular charges for Caesar artillery, supply of explosive 120mm cartridges for the Leclerc tank, and 105mm practice cartridges for AMX 10R CR armored vehicles.
The deal also restarts production of 100mm cartridges for the French Navy, Nexter said.
Nexter had shown interest in the Munitions Acquisition Supply Solution contract signed between BAE Systems and the British Ministry of Defense in 2008, which guaranteed a long-term supply at an agreed price, and allowed a reorganization of industrial facilities.

N. Korea Military Pledges Support for New Leader


SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea's powerful military has held a mass rally to pledge loyalty to the country's new chief Kim Jong Un, vowing to become "rifles and bombs" to protect him, official media said Jan. 10.

The North also announced a rare amnesty for prisoners as the untested, young leader tries to build support.
Service members promised to "become rifles and bombs to serve as Kim Jong Un first-line lifeguards and Kim Jong Un first-line death-defying corps", the official KCNA news agency said.
The regime moved quickly to proclaim Kim, aged in his late 20s, as its new chief after the sudden death of his father and supreme leader Kim Jong Il on Dec. 17.
Kim Jong Il had appointed the son, who is ranked a general but has no known active military experience, as supreme commander of the 1.2 million-strong military.
On Jan. 8, state media showed Kim Jong Un driving a tank and giving orders to artillery, navy and air force units in an apparent attempt to bolster his credentials with the world's fourth-largest armed forces.
KCNA said armed forces chief Ri Yong Ho read the pledge of loyalty to Kim at the Jan. 9 rally in Pyongyang of the three branches of the military, which ended with a march past.
The message pledged to "wipe out the enemies to the last one if they intrude into the inviolable sky, land and seas of the country even 0.001 mm", it said.
The rally paid tribute to the "unswerving Songun will" of the new leader, a reference to an army-first policy which prioritizes their welfare over civilians in a country hit by severe food shortages.
The North separately announced an amnesty for prisoners to mark the upcoming birth anniversaries of its late leaders.
KCNA said the amnesty - the first since 2005, according to South Korea's unification ministry - would apply to "convicts" but did not give numbers or elaborate on who would benefit.
Rights groups say more than 200,000 men, women and children are held in prisons and labor camps, mostly for political and not criminal reasons.
The 70th anniversary of the birth of Kim Jong Il is on Feb. 16. The 100th anniversary of the birth of Kim's father and founding president Kim Il Sung falls on April 15.
The news agency said the decision embodies "the "noble, benevolent and all-embracing politics" of the late Kims.
The regime has vowed not to change course under its new leader and has kept up a stream of hostile commentary on South Korea.
Main newspaper Rodong Sinmun took aim Jan. 10 at a decision by the South and its U.S. ally to sign a joint plan on responding to any North Korean attacks.
An editorial described the joint plan and scheduled exercises related to it as "a conspiracy aimed at eventually triggering a war to invade the (North) with the help of a foreign power."
"The traitor Lee Myung Bak is at the forefront of fanning the madness for war," it said of the South's president.
